Since 1918, The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has been dedicated to promoting the mental health of all and supporting the resilience and recovery of people experiencing mental illness. One of oldest voluntary organizations in Canada, CMHA continues to provide direct service to more than 100,000 Canadians. The only organization that deals with all aspects mental health and mental illness, CMHA staff and volunteers (over 10,000) focus on accomplishing this mission in over 120 communities through advocacy, education, research and service.
CMHA relies heavily on the public and corporate donations to provide a wide range of innovative services and supports to people experiencing mental illness and to their families by tailoring these services to the needs and resources of the communities within which they are based including culturally-appropriate services.
The Canadian Mental Health Association – Central Region has been providing direct service to community members in southern Manitoba for more than 25 years and maintains a strong grassroots connection to the community it serves. By leveraging its adaptability and responding to key gaps in existing services, CMHA Central has experienced considerable growth and has become known for innovation and forward thinking leadership.
The Board of Directors for CMHA Central Region is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to provide leadership and vision for the continued successful growth and development of the agency. Located in Portage la Prairie and reporting directly to the Board, the ED is the principal spokesperson and representative for the organization. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the structure and accessibility of mental health services for residents of southern Manitoba.
Responsible for the general and financial management of the agency, the ED will provide leadership and accountability for all core functions including strategic planning, program and service delivery, operational management, budget/financial/fundraising management, agency administration, human resources and government, community and stake holder relations such as:
- Operating within an approved budget and overseeing all financial resources and transactions of revenues and expenditures and coordinating all funding contracts in cooperation with the Board;
- Working collaboratively with the Board of Directors to implement strategic vision, provide reports, consultation and recommendations pertaining to policies, procedures and programs of the organization;
- Manage and oversee all aspects of human resources operations, including hiring, staff development, evaluation and progressive discipline including by delegated authority where appropriate;
- Ensure an open operating environment including accountability for compliance with Board policies, mission, relevant by-laws, legislation/regulations and legal and contractual agreements;
- Network with government, community agencies/organizations, other service providers, clients and community leaders and members within the region through outreach and community development activities, personal contact, media representation and promotional campaigns;
- Steward capital assets of the agency including oversight of property management and tenant relations functions.
- Manage, oversee and assess programs to identify needs and emerging issues in service delivery and education, equipment and other resource needs to ensure high quality programming and services; and
- Maintain and establish strong, positive and collaborative community presence including liaison with existing and potential funders.
Selection Criteria include:
- Graduate degree in a related field preferred;
- Minimum of (5) years’ leadership experience within voluntary or public sector organization, preferably in a related field;
- Knowledge of all federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector organizations including: employment standards, human rights, occupational health and safety, charities, taxation, CPP, EI, health coverage etc.;
- Demonstrated understanding of current challenges and opportunities relating to mental health, particular understanding of mental health promotion and housing first approaches;
- Organizational leadership and experience managing the operations of an agency inclusive of quality and continuous improvement, planning, program oversight, fund development, budgeting & reporting; and change management;
- Demonstrated effective human resource management, financial management and project management skills;
- Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships & partnerships, fostering enthusiasm and commitment with the board, staff, the community, collateral organizations, and various internal and external stakeholders;
- Experience working with marginalized, vulnerable populations; and
- A valid driver’s license as well as the ability to pass various security checks such as Criminal Record and Abuse Registry Checks.
