CMHA Central is proud to provide a variety of courses through the Thrive Learning Centre.
FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH
These courses provide information on specific mental health problems, as well as skills and strategies for coping with them.
This 4 session, 1 hour per session course covers major depressive disorder including signs and symptoms, impacts on your body, mind and relationships as well as teach strategies and coping skills to live well with depression.
Understanding Addiction / Substance Abuse
This 2 session, 1.5 hour per session course covers alcohol and drug addiction. Day 1 focuses on the short and long term impacts of drug abuse. Day 2 focuses on treatment options available within the community and other coping strategies.
This 5 session, 1 hour per session course covers anxiety and anxiety disorders including symptoms, risk factors, complications, common disorders and treatment options and coping skills to manage anxiety.
When the Voices Fell Silent
This single, 2 hour presentation is an opportunity for students to watch a 48 minute documentary followed by an interactive Q&A session. The film features the mental health recovery journey of Sean and Doris Miller and contains interviews with renowned doctors, scientists, and various subject matter experts who explain the methods used to completely restore Sean’s health. BUILDING MY BEST LIFE
These courses focus on improving mental health by teaching stress management, improving self-esteem and promoting healthy relationships.
Journey to Recovery
This 2 session, 1 hour per session course is intended to increase self-awareness about the participants’ recovery. We will begin by defining what recovery and the recovery model are, then move into the stages of recovery. Topics also covered include the stages of disability and the stages of change. The purpose of this course is to encourage participants to recognize their own place within recovery and encourage advancement towards the healthiest stage of recovery possible.
Building a Healthy Self-Esteem
This 2 session, 1 hour per session course is intended to inform the participants of healthy self-esteem and self-confidence. We will cover obstacles to self-esteem, the inner critic and the four aspects of self-esteem. This course will encourage participants to reflect on the own level of self-esteem and offer opportunities and methods to improve self-confidence.
Building Healthy Friendships
This 4 session, 1 hour per session course focuses on self-esteem, self-worth, loneliness, self-care, making new friends (where, how and who). It also addresses barriers to friendship, healthy boundaries and communication skills. This course helps students build the healthiest friendships possible for the betterment of their recovery.
Building Blocks for Managing Stress
This 2 session, 1 hour per session course begins by exploring the causes and how the body responds to stress as well as including relaxation techniques. Day 2 focuses on offering solutions to the problem of stress by teaching useful coping strategies.
FINDING MY VOICE
These courses help individuals learn to express themselves in healthy and effective ways.
Telling Your Story
This 3 session, 1 hour per session course discusses the process of writing and telling one’s own story of mental illness or addiction. Day 1 focuses on creative expression, storytelling and relating it to the recovery process. Day 2 features a speaker who will shares their own personal story for the sake of motivation and connection. Day 3 focuses on public speaking for those who choose to tell their own stories to an audience.
Focus on Physical Health
These courses focus on the link between physical and mental health, improving physical health and dealing with physical health problems
Walk and Talk
This interactive course is about feeling good! Research suggests physical activity at least 20 minutes daily can improve mental and physical health. We invite students to join us as we walk towards better health.
Connecting to My Community
These courses help individuals build a network of resources and support, and assist them in becoming more involved in their community
Navigating Mental Health Services
This 1 hour course looks at how to access mental health services and resources in the central region, including how to connect to these services.
