In 2019 The World Health Organization put out a report that summarized 3000 studies that showed evidence that being creatively engaged on a regular basis has a significant impact on our physical and mental health. Creative activity can include crafts, music, dance, theatre, visual arts, literary arts, culinary arts etc.
Some of the benefits include:
β’ Decrease in depression
β’ Increase in feeling of social connection
β’ Stronger resilience
β’ Fewer medical visits to health care facilities
β’ Increase in positive emotions
β’ Increase in sense of hope
β’ Feeling of fulfillment
β’ Raises serotonin levels
β’ Changes our outlook on how we experience the world
β’ Improves emotional balance
β’ Improves brain functions that are crucial to all other learning
β’ It activates the pleasure center in the brain
β’ Reduction of stress
β’ Improved immune system responses
β’ May delay cognitive decline
β’ Quicker recovery times from illness
We have known these things for a very long time. The difference now is that we have brain research to back it up.
The WHO went on to recommend:
β’ Supporting the implementation of community arts programs for mental health
β’ Ensuring equal access to culturally diverse art experience across the lifespan
β’ Developing interventions that encourage arts engagement as a way to promote healthy lifestyles

It has been known for a long time that being creative on a regular basis has many benefits for our mental and physical health. It helps us to think positively and gives us energy. We may not be able to control what happens in the world, but we can become stronger in our minds through creative activities.
We want to create a safe place for people to try different ways to be creative. Being able to attend often helps people to benefit from these activities.
The first session is for 1 hour a week, for 5 weeks.
Heather Martens Rempel invites you to the first 5 week session where we will be making colorful prints using acrylic paint, recycling materials and a gel-plate. This activity is easy and fun for all ages and abilities.
All supplies and a snack will be provided at no cost to participants.
We hope to have more sessions depending on the interest expressed by participants.
You can register by contacting our office located at 102 1st St NW Portage la Prairie.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) β Central Region is accepting applications from community members to serve on its Board of Directors for a minimum two-year term of service.
CMHA Central seeks to support the resilience and recovery of people living with mental health issues by offering services that support growth, self-determination, and empowerment. By offering an environment that is encouraging, compassionate, and non-judgmental, we assist individuals who wish to take positive steps toward personal recovery. We also seek to enhance the mental health of the community at large by advocating for improved access to mental health services, educating policy makers and community members, championing efforts to eliminate stigma, and working collaboratively with partners who share our cause.
